Almost four years ago, I fell in love for the first time--twenty-five years too late--and began an affair. Over the years, Kevin and I have met several times a week and email several times a day. I have kept almost all of the emails that I sent to him and that he sent to me. Along the way, there has been laughter and tenderness and heat...and heartache.

This blog is the posting of our daily emails. It chronicles the lives of two people over a four year period so far, and tells the story of our burgeoning love against the backdrop of New York City.

The names and addresses have been changed to protect the innocent; the rest is 100% real.

The daily update structure helps keep the blog as authentic as possible as well as living up to its title. It also strives to provide the reader with the kind of pleasure that a soap opera offers--a daily dose of voyeuristic fun.

Please begin at the beginning, otherwise, little will make sense.

Enjoy.

Summer Love

Good morning! What a beautiful day!

I thought we weren’t going to chat last night. I wanted you to get rest for work today.  I would’ve stayed at the computer if I knew you would change your mind. It occurred to me to check but I didn’t want to be clingy : ) How was the game? Who won? And did your mentee have a good time? What’s the story there?

I hope to knock off the Newsletter today. I’m so glad summer is here, no homework, no Newsletter, no Parents Association, no crazy head of school, just books and films, and sun and you (I hope).

We did agree not to chat. So I guess that makes me the clingy one. You are just so unbelievably hot. More importantly you are so much fun to be with and I don’t just mean the making out. I even enjoy just walking with you. I’m so glad you like walking. We must have been walking really slowly to your massage.

I am looking forward to a summer full of us too! It is going to be awesome.

My mentee had a good time. He is a good kid. He is a nerd. The coordinator of the program said when she met him she thought of me right away. Ouch. The kids are from the Professional Performing Artists School. He is a singer. He has a really cool deep voice. It reminds me of Rick Astley. Not sure that is a good thing. We are supposed to show them that being involved in the arts can mean more than performing. He is not interested in being a singer. I think he wants to go into “politics” but at the moment doesn’t know how. He has an internship with a city council woman and sits on the mock Court of Harlem. His politics are very very conservative. He is way right of me even! It is all he talks about. I had to cut him off at some point because he was speaking entre nous about the glories of Israel and the evil Arabs. He was baffled by my opinions. A 16 year old wouldn’t really be thinking independently right? If he gets all his news in NYC he couldn’t see both sides of this. Palestinians need better lobbyist here I think. His parents both work in theatre. They are stage manages for Wicked. One in NYC and the other on the road show. They seem to be very well off in an upper wise side sort of way. I want to man him up a bit. The councilwoman that he is working with is a liberal lesbian. You have to give the kid credit. I am expecting there will be lots of great stories.

I hope you get the newsletter knocked off today too. It will give you more time to think about important things, like me!

Can one person have been more annoyed than I have been today?! I’ve wanted to write you since 9 this morning, and stuff just keeps coming up. Of course, my worthless husband decides to go to lunch with a contact today, when the kids just have finals, come home early, and want to be driven around. I just dropped them off at Starbuck, and have to go get them in a few minutes so their friend can catch her school bus back home.

I LOVE that photo of you breaking bricks. Is that before, during or after? You must have very strong hands! I want to feel them on me more! You didn’t shock me, but you have impressed the shit out of me.

Can you send that mentee of yours to my house, and take one of my One Direction listening daughters until she is 18? I always assume these programs are for inner city youths, usually African American or Latin kids from poor families. What does this kid need a mentor for? He sounds all over the place, like any 16 year old. How can he have conservative values and live in this city and work for a liberal lesbian?! Unless it’s only about Jews which is just so not surprising. And we must talk about your conservative values too the next time I see you. Hmm.

When you figured out my name, and told me you’re reading about Mossadegh, and are interested in Iran and Shia, I thought OK, he is recruiting me for the CIA. Yup, just find a married woman, and blackmail her into doing his bidding. Doesn’t help that I was reading a similar story in the New Yorker by Ian McEwan, one of my favorite writers. I’ve written a lot of fiction, so you can see how my imagination works.

I have you on my mind too, all the time. It’s kind of scary, but so infinitely pleasurable. I was thinking though that we need to be really careful in public, especially on the UES, and Westside too I guess. We have to walk as if were platonic at all times. I was thinking if we run into anyone who knows either of us, we need a cover story. How about you are my gay German cousin? Can you do a German accent? Gay men can be normal, not all are queens, so it won’t matter that you “appear and behave” straight. And me, what should I be? I wish I were hanging around with you today!!!

Oh, by the way, I don’t know about other people but I love nerds. If that’s what you are. As I always tell the girls, it’s good to have a nerd side and a cool side. The nerd is the serious one, the one who studies, is intellectual and gets things done. The cool person is only good for letting out at parties.

XXXOOOOO

I’m glad you wrote, even if I had to wait. Of course hanging out would be even better. Sorry to hear about your annoying day. I don’t know how you do it.

We definitely need to be careful in public. Greetings and farewells should be friend hugs. I even said it out loud when I left you on Tuesday so I would be conscious of it.  I need to think about the cover story. I can do a German accent, or at least one that would pass. I learned German from Hogan’s Heroes, “I see nuhsink, I hear nuhsink.” Gay I can do. If you catch me off guard though I might react funny. If it helps us be together I will deal. As for you my pretty, I got no clue.

It is after. I was trying to break all three, but only got through 2. Still trying to get that third one. I am 30 pounds lighter now and I don’t go to class often so I am not sure what the prospects are.

My hands are very strong and very warm. I want to put them on you. In fact, when the circumstances are right, see above, just try to keep them off of you.

If we get high together you will know I am not a CIA operative. So I guess the sooner we do that the better. I didn’t exactly guess your name either. It was one of three or so. I can see why you would be worried though. The missile technology in River Manor is secret, and the confidential info you are passing via The Newsletter is highly classified. Either way, the laundry is in the refrigerator. I am flattered to be considered a honey pot.

I am a nerd who tries to play cool. I think I do it very well.

I will write more about the kid and my conservative values later. I had started, but it was beginning to ramble. It is too important a subject for flippant comments. Let’s just say a lot of people hate me, literally, for what I believe, but no one has ever hated me for something I have done. I am fine with that.

Most people can’t break one brick! I remember our self-defense instructor in college telling us, when you want to punch someone don’t think about your hand stopping at their face or whatever body part, imagine your hand going through it; that way your punch will be much stronger. I’m sure it takes a lot of concentration.

As to your conservative views, I’m sure I’ll put up with them, even if I don’t like them, because you’re just too hot.

I have a big nerd side and proud of it! So, let’s talk later tonight. You’re around? And at the risk of sounding clingy, when are we seeing each other again?

My conservative beliefs are simple. I dislike death and government. I believe in the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

I will be around tonight. Let’s talk then.

If it were up to me, I would be seeing you tonight. And tomorrow. What are our options? I am not sure when you can come into the city. I can make myself available just about any time you can. I would love to see you as soon as possible.

Is about 10:30 Tuesday all right? <3 can you tell what this is? My 11 year old taught me it.

10:30 should be good. I will certainly get on as soon as the coast is clear. To an 11 year old, I am sure less than three isn’t what you are getting at.  I am afraid to guess it is a pair of boobs.

No silly man, it’s a heart! I wish I could go away with you, somewhere far away, and stay there forever…like a deserted island.

What do you think of this one? I made it up for The Newsletter's last issue of the year, "Note from the Editor."

May your summer bring
sun soaked afternoons,
tall beaded drinks,
delicious books,
fireflies,
fragrant nights,
and all sweet memories
of summer-time delights.
