Almost four years ago, I fell in love for the first time--twenty-five years too late--and began an affair. Over the years, Kevin and I have met several times a week and email several times a day. I have kept almost all of the emails that I sent to him and that he sent to me. Along the way, there has been laughter and tenderness and heat...and heartache.

This blog is the posting of our daily emails. It chronicles the lives of two people over a four year period so far, and tells the story of our burgeoning love against the backdrop of New York City.

The names and addresses have been changed to protect the innocent; the rest is 100% real.

The daily update structure helps keep the blog as authentic as possible as well as living up to its title. It also strives to provide the reader with the kind of pleasure that a soap opera offers--a daily dose of voyeuristic fun.

Please begin at the beginning, otherwise, little will make sense.

Enjoy.

Someone I know will be at the Met today.  We need to find something else to do.  How do you feel about the Modern?

Who will be at the Met today? Your wife? How did you find that out so late at night?

I wanted to do the Met, because I heard that the roof garden bar is nice and so is the view. I checked MoMA, there doesn't seem to be anything really interesting, but the location is good. What are their eating facilities besides the uber expensive The Moderne? The Guggenheim has an interesting photo exhibit by a Dutch person. Is that too close to the Met? I don't know whether their cafes are nice. But I really don't want to wander around for 3 hours looking at art I don't really care about. Isn't this ultimately about us reconnecting? A little art, a lot of wine and looking at you : )

I would have loved to go to the Met too.  If I hear her plans have changed we can do that.  I will let you know.  You are correct, this is about us reconnecting.  We could go to the Boathouse again.  It might be a nice way to spend the afternoon.  No art, unless you count Central Park.  It might be a nice way to take advantage of the gorgeous weather.

Sure, the boathouse is good. The afternoon we spent there was wonderful. I have great memories from the park. Would you be embarrassed if I carry a parasol? : ) Do you want me to bring you sunblock?

Cool.  So we will meet at 72nd and 5th at 3.  Parasol is fine, I will have my own sunblock.  We will be in the shade for the most part.  See you at 3!

Have you heard about the shooting at the Empire State Building?  Crazy.

Love you HFG

Hey HFG,

I am heading out and won't have email.  You should text me or call me.  I will see you at 72nd and 5th at 3 unless I hear from you.   See you soon HFG.

We settled outside in the café area of the Boathouse, safe among the tourists. Kevin had found a table in a corner under an umbrella, and we sat cozily in our circle of shade surrounded by the shimmering afternoon. In the café, they only serve drinks, so we drank a round of chilled rosé and talked, then we drank another round of rosé, ate some of the Jacques Torres chocolates that Kevin had brought me, and made fun of obnoxious or badly dressed tourists; a couple of fat lesbians drinking beer at the table next to us didn't escape our bitchy wit. Somewhere at the beginning of the third round, we started to kiss. We touched each other wherever was acceptable in public--hands, face, neck, hair. Once, I grazed his erection and he went further. We were oblivious then to the people around us, or the trajectory of the sun in the sky. It was only as it began to set that we realized our time together was up.  We left the café, heading toward the park exit, but before we parted, we had to duck into the woods.

You're insane. These letters are so...what can I say : )

I had such a good time with you this afternoon. You allow me to be stupid, thank you for that. I so often have to be responsible. Thanks for the drinks, but most of all the company.

I love you, Kevin, my Kevin.

I miss you already.

XOXOXOXO

HFG
